Specifics
The only one of its kind
Ab Kooij designed a number Rederij Kooij ships himself. The President John F. Kennedy is one of them. To this day, it is one of the most beautiful tour boats in Amsterdam and perhaps even in the Netherlands.
Events
The two largest sporting events in which Rederij Kooij has sailed are the celebration of becoming European Champion of the Dutch national socces team in 1988 and the celebration of Ajax Amsterdam after winning the Champions League final in 1995. These were both sailed on the John F. Kennedy.
The celebration of the European Championship brought hundreds of thousands of people on their feet along the canals, in their own boats, in the water, on balconies of houses or even nestled on roofs of houseboats to catch a glimpse of the Orange players.
The welcoming of Ajax was reminiscent of the madness in 1988, now fortunately somewhat less massive. Still, the scenes were similar to those of the past, along the route there were supporters everywhere on the canals and on all bridges. Houseboats, cars and even traffic signs were climbed, and of course here and there a number of crazy supporters jumped into the wonderful Amsterdam canals.
V.I.P.s
Over the years, a huge range of famous and well-known people have sailed on the John F. Kennedy. What makes the Kennedy even more special is that both Queen Beatrix and King Willem Alexander sailed on the Kennedy during their coronations. This is how Princess Beatrix started and ended her period as queen with Rederij Kooij.
