When the municipality of Amsterdam announced plans in 1996 for setting
specific environmental targets with regard to passenger transport
along the canals of Amsterdam, the municipality was mainly referring
to the use of alternative, environmentally friendly fuel.
Reederij P. Kooij decided to convert its existing engines and experiment
with bio diesel (rapeseed oil). At present, 16 boats are powered
by bio-diesel fuel.
The experiments carried out by Reederij P. Kooij attracted the attention
of central government, resulting in the company’s nomination
for the "Milieuprijs voor de Scheepvaart 1998 [Dutch Shipping
Industry Environmental Award]" of the Ministerie van Verkeer
en Waterstaat [Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management].
